INFORMATION FROM THE UK SONGWRITING CONTEST:

THE SCORING

We have posted this explanation of the judges scoring to help contestants understand the numbers they see when they look up their results in the contest.

FIRST STAGE: 1 - 5 Stars

During the first round of judging a distinction is made between songs that make it to the semi finals and those that do not. Those songs that are not selected for the semi finals are carefully marked with a score of between 1 and 5. This gives contestants feedback on their entry and lets them see how well their song performed compared to the other songs in the contest.

A score of 1 Star indicates that the song was considered to be poorly written in comparison to other songs in the contest. It needs almost complete re writing or abandoning.

A score of 2 Stars indicates that the song was considered to among the weaker songs in the contest. In the judges opinion the song needs re writing and re thinking but there is room for improvement and there is some potential.

A score of 3 Stars indicates that this song is an acceptable composition and it follows the accepted standards of song form, presentation, melody, metre etc. The song would almost certainly benefit from some re working and re writing but it clearly shows that the writer has songwriting ability and talent.

COMMENDED ENTRIES:

A score of 4 or 5 Stars indicates that the judges considered this to be a good and well written song, and songs with these scores will receive a Commended Entry Certificate.

A score of 5 Stars is regarded by the judges as a very good score and it indicates that the song nearly made the semi finals. It marks the cut off point between most entries and the semi finals.

NOTE: Most songs in the contest will not receive a score higher than 5.

HIGHER STAGES:

Songs that make it through to the higher stages are marked with scores between 6 and 10.

SEMI FINALS:  A score of 6 or 7 indicates that the song was judged to be a semi finalist and is one of the stronger songs in the contest and is among the top entries. A score of 7 indicates that the song was a borderline finalist and almost made it through to the finals.

FINALS: Songs with a very high score of 8 or 9 are finalists and are all considered for the winning and runner up positions. Only a tiny percentage of entries will reach this level. All runners up will have a score of 9 and these few high scoring songs are all very carefully considered for the winning position in their categories.

WINNERS: At the very end of the judging process the winning songs in each category are given a score of 10 to separate them from the other entries and identify them as the winning song. This score does not mean they are considered "100% perfect" (there is no such thing) but it does mean they were judged to be the winner in that category.
